Introduction: The trap of quantity
We live in a culture that confuses quantity and quality. Whether in a strategic report, a thesis, or a technical project, the reflex is universal: to be credible, one must be exhaustive. Nothing should be left to chance.
Yet, this desire to "cover everything" is a dangerous trap. Instead of providing us with a better grasp of reality, it forces us to fragment it infinitely. Far from being a solution, exhaustiveness is the starting point of a collective quagmire.
Here is the demonstration in four parts.
1. The paradox of the map and the territory
To be completely exhaustive on a subject, one must describe every detail. But as reality is infinitely complex, the only way for a human mind to achieve this is to drastically narrow the field of observation.
- The more one wants to be complete, the more one must shrink the subject.
- This is the beginning of hyperspecialisation: we know more and more about fewer and fewer things.
The observation is bitter: Exhaustiveness does not lead to overall clarity; it inevitably leads to the fragmentation of thought.
2. The quagmire in silos
This is where the trap closes. To manage the mass of information necessary for this exhaustiveness, we are forced to create battalions of specialists.
- The fragmentation of meaning: Each specialist digs their own furrow. They become exhaustive in their field but blind to that of their neighbour.
- The loss of coherence: By focusing on the details under a magnifying glass, no one sees the bigger picture anymore. We optimise bolts without knowing if the machine is still useful.
We are sinking into expertise tunnels that no longer communicate with each other.
3. The illusion of security
Why do we cling to completeness? Out of fear. Fear of being caught out, fear of missing a nuance. We think that the accumulation of details protects us.
This is false. In trying to control everything, we create systems that are so complex (because they are sums of thousands of micro-specialisations) that they become unmanageable, heavy, and unpredictable. An excess of details kills the intelligence of the situation and paralyses decision-making.
4. The solution is never in the problem
If completeness is the problem that creates complexity, the solution cannot be to add additional layers of control. Yet, that is what we do: faced with overload, we recruit more experts to handle more data. This is the fundamental error: we seek the solution within the problem itself.
The real paradigm shift is to understand that the best way to solve a problem is for there to be no problem.
- The classical approach (additive): “Is it complicated? Let’s add a procedure to manage the complexity.”
- The radical approach (subtractive): “Is it complicated? Let’s remove what creates the complexity.”
The answer to completeness is not to increase our processing capabilities, but to eliminate unnecessary burden.
Conclusion: The art of subtraction
We are sinking into specialisations because we have created bureaucracies that require highly skilled technicians for every cog.
To escape this machinery, we must stop glorifying those who do more (the exhaustive) and start valuing those who have the courage to do less, but better.
The goal is not to find a complex solution to a complex problem. It is to simplify the equation until the problem disappears by itself. Do not try to say everything. Look for what you can remove without the structure collapsing.
It is there, in the void created by what we dared to remove, that true mastery resides.

It only artificially increases the decision-maker's confidence (the illusion of control) without increasing their actual precision.

4. Problem solving Study: People systematically overlook subtractive changes, Adams & Klotz (Nature, 2021) The human brain systematically favours addition (adding a solution) over subtraction. However, the most robust solution is often to remove the element that causes the problem.
